In October 1998, a handful of executive directors from public housing authorities and former senior HUD officials formed the National Organization of African Americans in Housing (NOAAH). Originally designed to address the needs of the management and residents of PHAs, serve as an affordable housing advocate, and a clearinghouse for information and training intensive organization, NOAAH has grown to be in a position to influence a wide range of housing issues. We have worked with nearly all of the country’s housing organizations, congressional delegations, the current and past national administrations.
Some of our recent successes are:
- Direct, one on one engagement with members and leadership of Congress on the stimulus bill resulted in a new appropriation of four billion dollars for public housing initiatives.
- We engaged members of Congress for the funding and passage of the Housing Trust Fund.
- Interaction with members of Congress in support of passage of the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008.
- Worked with the Obama Administration Transition teams on policy and personnel opportunities.
- Providing the attached collection of policy recommendations to HUD Secretary Donovan, members of The United States Congress and the President’s Domestic Policy Council.
NOAAH intends to continue involving its members in the needed changes in housing policy, personnel and contact points at the highest levels of the administration and Congress. We expect to use our experience and position to promote answers to our nation’s housing woes.
As a member of NOAAH, you will have an effective and strong voice and become part of the growing influence that shapes tomorrow's public and affordable housing issues.
